Q: What's been a game changer for you and your business?

Hiring employees and outsourcing things in exchange for more time! I don’t know how my father was able to run the business as a sole proprietor for almost 30 years with very little help from others. I have learned you don’t have to do everything alone and that it’s okay to solicit help. Of course, it impacts your margins. However, your time is always more valuable. If you can outsource or hire someone to do the job for less than your personal hourly rate, then DO IT!

Q: How did the idea for your business come about?

I am in the process of re-branding an existing business. Updated business model, name, the whole 9-yards. I want to carry on the legacy and scale what has been given to me to create jobs and give back to my family.

Q: What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

I believe I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. Although my father was a business owner and it inspired me in so many ways, the thought of non-guaranteed income was never something I was comfortable with. Thus, I elected for guaranteed salary working in retail management. Recently, my leap of faith into entrepreneurship wholeheartedly came up with the passing of my father and the opportunity to take over the established family business. I left my salaried job with sufficient skills to feel confident in taking over the business in place of my father. My key driving force has always been the light from within and it is who I have always been.

Rise is an intimate salon de soufflé and wine bar designed with French influence. Our relaxed bistro focuses on the soufflé—the masterpiece of French cuisine. Our unique approach is to turn something as simple as an egg into something as magnificent, yet unfussy, as the soufflé. rise is the first of its kind, bringing the French classic to our diners in a comfortable, casual environment.

Q: How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?

I feel more present, and my priorities are in order because I’m intentional about it and have the bandwidth to do so. Taking this path has helped me grow closer to my family and my community. I am in full control of my schedule. My people can reach me, especially in times of need, and I can be there for them. It’s refreshing not to be under the jurisdiction of someone else’s authority. I don’t have to justify what I do or when I do it. Of course, if you don’t work, you don’t generate income for the business, so there needs to be a reasonable balance. Although my people are my priority, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries. Just because you’re flexible doesn’t mean you’re always available and that is okay!

Q: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur?

If you are not striving to be the best, it’s not the right fit for you. You shouldn’t be asking if you want to give everything, your actions will naturally fall in place. If you find it difficult to want to give your all, move on to something where you will. Otherwise, you will not reach the level of success you’re dreaming of and someone will do it better than you.

Q: What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? You must be motivated, open to new ideas, and disciplined. If all else fails, it’s on you!
