The invitation only quarterly networking events culminating in an Annual Gala are ways to venerate those esteemed bankers who have created a legacy of, “A banker’s life well lived.’ As recognition in the highest regard fellow bankers acknowledge colleague contributions to Dallas, North Texas, and the surrounding communities. Q: What is your company service offering? The Bankers Clubs’ themselves do not necessarily offer a service or a product but offer something more valuable to a banker which is access to other top senior bankers and executives. Bankers are a curious bunch in that they want to know what other bankers are doing, what deals they have closed, what deals did they pass on, even bigger are their opportunities to work with each other or referrals that can be garnered. 

During the formation of the Bankers Club, I had the idea to start a clothing brand called The Banker’s Tailor. I often buy custom suits and most bankers have a ‘guy’ that does custom suits. The Banker’s Tailor is a Bespoke Custom suit clothier dedicated to those in the banking industry and beyond.

Q: Who are your ideal clients? The Dallas Bankers Club and the other Texas clubs do not have clients per se but have club members. Our ideal members are Senior Vice Presidents or Executives within the financial services industry predominantly commercial banking. We try to maintain a mix of bankers from Multi-National, National, Super Regional, Regional, and Community Banks all within the Commercial Banking industry. Many of our members are what we call C&I bankers which stands for Commercial and Industrial. We have Commercial Real Estate Bankers as well as other non-traditional lenders who also attend. Basically, our members are bankers that lend to those businesses keeping our economic engine moving along.

Q: What lessons have you learned that shifted your mindset to optimize how to practice your leadership/business? It has been a learning experience. As a banker myself with 25 years of experience, I find myself faced with challenges my bank's clients face each and every day. I really have an appreciation for what business owners face to keep the doors open. The biggest lesson I have learned and continue to learn is Time Management. As a full-time Senior Vice President at a financial institution, I have to balance the commitment that I owe my employer for a successful career with my passion for my business. The fact that it is me as a banker working with bankers makes the idea of The Dallas Bankers Club work.


Q: If you can do over something in the past, what will it be and why? I do not think I would change anything as I truly believe all the experiences, I have had shaped my character. I had a non-traditional upbringing with tragedy and hardship. 

Q: What was the game changer for you that catapulted your leadership/business? I have been totally surprised and humbled by the success of the clubs. Our first event had forty-nine bankers and have since organically grown to over five hundred throughout the Texas market. We are adding new members each week simply by word of mouth and our social media presence on LinkedIn. The game changer is really the hundreds of requests I received from bankers asking if they can get on the invitation list. From that point, I realized I had something that is very special. Once the bankers started coming in the door then came our special sponsors whom without them would be a difficult underwriting for the large events.

Q: What exciting projects are you working on? The Banker’s Tailor is a project we have been working on for a while. Developing a custom brand clothier is a labor of love. That being said, there are so many aspects to building a brand that are overwhelming. I want to be the specialty go-to brand for Bankers suits. Affordable custom suits, shirts, made specifically to their particular desires. Our self-measurement tutorial allows for a comfortable in-home experience with hundreds of fabrics to choose from. The other project we are embarking on is our Bankers Club APP whereby we can cultivate banker connectivity not only in Texas but any bankable market. Imagine that the financial services industry specifically commercial banking has a substantial universe of over 500,000 in the US and 1,000,000 globally. Developing a niche within this space is exciting with multi facets of revenue and advertising. If we can develop a membership-based platform for career development, education, and connectivity to deal sponsorship, then I think we have a solution that bankers are searching for.

Q: How did the idea for your business come about? The Dallas Bankers Club is a product of insomnia and Ambien. What I mean by that is one evening while fully relaxed and ready for sleep, I started inviting all my banker friends to a happy hour. You see, I was that kid that had the keg spigot in school and have always liked to have large parties with friends. Rather than having just a few of us bankers, I thought the more the marrier. By the next morning I had sixty-nine RSVPs, and the rest is history. So, from just a few at a happy hour to a 1000 projected Texas members by end of 2023 is an amazing feeling. The brand has grown and, in a way, has taken on its own life. Most people could not tell you who started the club, in a cool way I am the Keyser Soze or the man behind the curtain of the organization. (Reference to Usual Suspects movie)

Q: What is your ultimate vision for your company?  My ultimate vision is to have a Bankers Club in every major metro area from Dallas – Houston to Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York to Miami and all in between. We are the premier invitation only Banker networking club in the country if not the world. I’ve not heard of nor seen another event hosting 150-250 Senior Commercial Bankers at each event in each market. It takes a banker to know a banker and that why I think we have been so successful.

Q: How do you build a successful customer base? I suppose free drinks and food is a big help! My customers are my members of the clubs. I do not believe there would be a Dallas Bankers Club or anything like it if I was not already a banker. Bankers are a tight knit group and typically have their territories and groups they like already locked down. The fact that when bankers attend one of our events, they know half the audience as they either use to work with them or have met them in bank meetings or are connected to colleagues somehow some way. The bottom line is no one is a stranger when they attend. The events are lively with lots of laughter and discussions.

QHow do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful? I do not really market in the true sense of the word. I use my creative side to market on LinkedIn but that is about it. I like to use music, voice, video, and satire to market the brand and so far, the reactions have been positive.

Q: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur? The beauty of being a so-called entrepreneur is that any one at any age or time in their life can be one. There are industries built around how to make an entrepreneur and have specific formulas and tactics that, if you follow, you too can be an entrepreneur. In my opinion you’re an entrepreneur if you think you are.

Q: What has been your most satisfying moment in business? Watching The Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio Banker Clubs grow from nothing to something. It’s been quite gratifying to watch it happen. I don’t know where this ends up but man, I am enjoying the ride!
