Stacey Porter is a high-level security professional leader with more than 20 years of Department of Homeland Security experience, where he managed security personnel in the aviation and security industry. Mr. Porter held a Top-Secret security clearance for over twenty years while employed with the federal government and has experience working with public and private sector organizations at the local, state, national and international levels. He carries a broad background in vulnerability assessment and mitigation, security planning, threat and risk assessment, and investigative management operations. Q: What are the key elements that your company offers?
The key elements that Porter Global Security, LLC offers is that we conduct vulnerability assessments for public facilities, such as hospitals, hotels, churches, schools, and airports while providing recommendations to improve physical security, enhance personal protection and defend against targeted acts of violence. Our vulnerability assessment experience has been used to conduct assessments on airports and businesses throughout the United States as well as internationally. We are also subject matter experts (SME’s) consulting in campus and school threat assessment training. We advise school resource officers in threat assessments and management, and guide campus and school threat assessment teams in developing effective programs to prevent acts of targeted violence. We also advise that threat assessments must be an integral part of a system that fosters a safe, supportive, and effective school environment, which is characterized by trust between students and adults, respect for others, parent involvement, and collaboration between school and community. Furthermore, when conducting physical security, you may want to implement creating a viable physical security strategy, which would depend on the specifics of the companies’ premises and your core business. We have successfully conducted more than 50 assessments at a wide variety of different types of corporate and aviation facilities over the past 15 years. This assessment process is constantly evolving, allowing us to take advantage of lessons learned from previous assessments, and to keep up with the latest security best practices. During our Security Assessment, we explain how all aspects of your security program are examined, any weaknesses that are identified, and suggestions for security improvements are made. In addition, opportunities where costs can be reduced or where security operations can be made more efficient are identified.

Q: How do you keep up with the latest developments in your industry?
Social media today is a vital tool for everyone running a business. Social media is one of the best ways to stay updated with trends. Checking out subreddits on Reddit, which is a social media site fueled by user-driver content. However, it is important for each industry leader to locate the subreddit that is most relevant to your business and check it often, as they are regularly updated with breaking news about the latest trends. I think it’s important for me to watch my competitors/peers because they can keep me clued into the latest trends. I have to continuously remind myself that any trends/changes I’m able to find online are trend/changes that my competitors are seeing too. Lastly, it’s important to attend conferences where I can learn more about the various security technology changes as well as networking with other security consultants to where we can collaborate on projects.

Q: What do you like most about what you do?
What I love most about my job is the collaborative environment with my clients. I also love that I have a voice. As the Principal Consultant, I also enjoy that I have a great degree of control and freedom within my company. Lastly and most importantly, after working twenty three years with the federal government, I love being my own boss. Culture is a vital piece in my industry as well. When it comes to security, you get one chance to get it right. there are no egos, no politics, and no gossip. In the security industry you are faced with challenges daily. so, feeling a sense of accomplishment when we are up against a deadline and we only have one shot to get it right, and the end result is that it turns out better than we could have expected. Lastly, as my client, I’m there to help them as best I can. What’s important to me is when I’m working on a client’s project, I love the fact that it’s filled with the start of all their possibilities and how I played an integral part of that.

Q: Who are the business leaders that you look up to, and why?
As a professional security consultant, I’m constantly learning new information from my peers and through the various security conferences that I continue to attend. To that end, as a member of the International Association of Professional Security Consultants, I admire many of the consultants and can lean on them for sound advice should I need it to assist me with my organization. Lastly, having played basketball and the love and respect I have for the game, one of the biggest business leaders that I look up to was the late great Kobe Bryant. His teammates were charged to hold to Kobe’s standards because Kobe demonstrated discipline, commitment, and respect for the game of basketball. Because Kobe Bryant demonstrated a type of self-leadership with a winning mindset, others fell in line and respected him as a true leader. This leadership mindset can be transformed to anyone running their own business.

Q: What does your ideal team look like?
In security, an ideal team of professionals is paramount. An effective team to me is well-balanced, with each role complementing and supporting the others. It’s okay to have some overlap in skills and responsibilities, but ultimately each role should own a specific domain. For example, as member with United States Secret Service, they ensure individuals selected have a commitment to honor, integrity, and excellence to join its ranks. I was very fortunate to be a part of this elite organization. To that end, my career with the federal government has allowed me to grow and learn the importance of hard work and what it means to be a team player. As a security consultant, team security should be a topic of discussion with the client. Different security teams can be created for different purposes. What also makes an ideal team is experience and credentials. if somebody has been in the industry for more than 20 years, then that person must be respected and listened to. However, this person is not always right. Security strategies nowadays are different than they were twenty to thirty years ago. Experience can go a long way, but inexperience can lead to asking the right questions, which is why mixing and matching can be best in many situations.
Q: What was your first job ever? While in high school, I worked for an apartment lawn service company.
